Scout Camp

On Friday the 15th of March I went to coastal scout camp at Riverton. When we all got there we had to set up our tent, beds and unpack. There was an opening ceremony after we set up camp. Then we had tea and went to bed.

The next morning we had breakfast and drove to a secret beach on a farm and went pauaing. I found and got two. All together we probably got 35 paua. But we had to chuck out 5 or 6 paua.  When we finished pauaing we had a snack and drove onto the beach.

When we thought we were in a good spot we parked up and got out. We got the flounder net and untangled it. Then we got into the cold water and dragged the net through the sea . In our net after our first pull we got a green bone fish. We pulled one more time I was at the deep end of the net where the big waves were. I got sucked under water when huge wave came with another huge one following it. I got sucked under for longer. Then we pulled the net out of the water. We caught nothing at all.

After that fail we had lunch and went for a walk down a road. At the end the road we stopped and climbed over a gate. On the other side was the beach. We mucked around and a leader lead us the wrong way down the beach so we turned around and walked the correct way. We all started to play on huge rocks. The leaders stopped and watched us all climb and play on the rocks.

When we got back to camp we got in our togs and walked to the beach. We split up into two groups. One half went kaiaking and the other half built rafts. When they finished building they tested them. One of the rafts went out with four barrels and came back with one barrel.

For tea we had the paua that we caught. After tea we watched our skits and went to bed. In the morning packed up. Then we had the closing ceremony and went home.

Advertisments

For the past couple of weeks we have been looking at how people advertise there products. Some of the ways they advertise there products are they use HUMOUR, they appeal to your SENSES, they use ALLITERATION, they use CELEBRITIES and alot more.We looked at what things would target different groups of people, like a bag of lollies would be targeting  kids not adults. We looked at some ads to see what caught our attention. We got a picture each and had to put it in a group either a Gimmick, Humour, Offering something, Asking questions and Celebrity Endorsements. One of the Gimmicks is I'm lovin' it. One of Offering Something is a buy one get one free. A question  was how do you eat yours? A Funny one is a Pepsi bottle with a straw in it and a coca bottle with a straw that wont go in it. Advertisements have to be catchy or funny to catch your attention.

In class this week we have been learning about Ice-Cream flavors because we are going to create our own flavours.  First we listed the popular flavors. Here are some:

Vanilla, Chocolate, Hokey Pokey, Banana Chocolate Chip and Goody Goody Gum Drops.

Then we listed some bizarre flavors that we found on the internet like: Shark Fin, Squid, Green Tea and Carrot, barbecue, pancakes, apricot and chocolate buttons, goat cheese with red cherry, avocado, French toast and Beer .

Now we are put in groups of Two or Three and we are going to create our own Ice-Cream.  Watch out for new flavours in the supermarket!!!

THE SCOOP OF SUMMER

At the start of term 1 we did a story about what we did in the holidays. First we did our draft copy and we sorted it in three paragraphs. The first one was called All About Me, then In The Holidays and the last one was This Year. This was the story that I did:

The Scoop Of Summer

All About Me

When I grow up I want to be a famous rugby player and go on world tours to visit countries I have never been before in my life. Learn different languages and learn how to use chopsticks the right way. Also last year(2012)  my sister Rebekah and I moved to Winton School because five years ago my family and I moved to Winton. We came down from Lochiel and at Lochiel School we car pooled with this boy named Adam Hillis who then came to Winton School and then we car pooled with another family for about two and a half years and then we came to Winton School.

In The Holidays

On the 25th September it was my birthday. I usually send three or four people but in the Christmas holidays we went to Dunedin and stayed in the Holiday park down in the south side. The first thing we did was we went to Stirling Sports, I bought a rugby tee. The next thing we went to was Smiggle. I bought an orange pencil case and a rubber. So did Rebekah, but it was purple instead.  About an hour later we went to Moana Pool. The first thing I went to first was the Hydro Slide, then after that it was the diving board. About twenty minutes later after the diving board it was the lazy river. We got bored after awhile so we asked mum if if could get out and go back to the Holiday Park. But when we got back there was a flash new car right in front of our cabin. It was my dad.He must of bought it down from Christchurch.

This Year

During the year I am hoping to go back to Dunedin again and collect more Smiggle things. Also I want to get in another Southland team for any sports. My two favourite sports are Cricket and Rugby.

Science

In Room 1 we have been doing science experiments, which is making school made butter, making food colouring move with dish washing liquid, making ice cream and milkshakes.

To make school made butter you have to get a rock, clean it well, get a bottle of cream,  put the rock in the jar & after that fill the jar quarter fill with cream. Close the lid tight & start to shake it so you can hear the rock hitting the bottom of the jar, check it in 5 min & if there is not a big lump in the jar then shake it another 5 min again, If it had a big lump in the middle then it was butter & if you put it on a cracker it tasted yummy.

I liked doing this experiment because I have never made home made butter before.

Room1 Art Work

A while ago in Room 1 we all made bright and colorful art. The art was our names in big bold writing and
drawings all around it. We had to make sure when they are up on the wall that every one could see them
the drawings were things that we liked or things that we have. they all had to be big and bold so we colored them in with pastel.

When we finished  we colored the background in with dark colors like black, brown, navy blue, darkish
purple and dark red. When we were all finished we had tell the class what we had put on our art and why. There are alot of awesome drawings and then they were all put up on the wall and that is where they have been ever since.

Room 1 Science

Last week in Room 1 we had to compare the changes that occur when different liquids are added to milk.
We had to add to add 3 drops of food coloring  to a plate of milk then we added some dish washing liquid to the plate of milk and food coloring.
But what happened next was amazing because when we added the dish washing liquid the food coloring  went to the edges.

The reason this happened was because the protein in the milk repels the dishwashing liquid. The food coloring show how the milk is moving.

The Important Book

At the start of the term Room 1 read a book called The Important Book. We decided to do one about the classroom rules. I did my page with Aimee.

The important thing about not throwing things inside is that you could break things and hurt people.

It is true that you could hit someone and they could get seriously injured. It is disobeying school rules and you can damage expensive equipment.

But the most important thing about not throwing things inside is that you could break things and hurt people.

Kelly Tartons

Last week room 1 was learning ways to grab attention here's my one that I shared in assembly.

We payed the cash to get into Kelly Tartans. As we stepped in there was a under water viewing platform  to see the penguins diving. They were really cute with black and white fur with a orange beak. In the next room was a small restaurant. I had a slushy. The flavour was orange juice it was nice and cold. Their was a awesome show of Stingrays. The man was tall with curly blond hair. The Stingrays hopped on his black silk wet suit awaiting for their daily eat of small fish. In their with the giant Stingrays were gigantic fish with fangs!

Next was a tube that use to be a sewer! In their was ferocious Sharks. I asked my Mum if i could go cage diving she said no. A sign said to look for the Conga Eel Shark. It was behind a totem  pole.

In the next room was my favourite animal a Octopus I'm very surprised it hasn't escaped the tank because they have no bones. Their were also some eel's. "They look very disgusting," said my Nana with a horid face.
But their it was swimming in the next tank a puffed up puffer fish. Wait even better... a Lion fish with its sharp as a knife back. That was a awesome day at Kelly Tartons.

Character Descriptions

In Room One last week we were practicing character descriptions. We  use character descriptions to create a picture of the characters in our readers head. Here is an example from my book.

I watched him lift the 200 kg weight with ease. "Hey you get off of me!," he yelled. I saw his black beard stuck on the bar. I stepped back. Uncle Bruno is scary when he gets mad.
